Peerage nomination for Kenneth Clarke should be put on hold, says The Haemophilia Society

Written by Jessica Bomford, February 10, 2020

Liz Carroll, CEO of The Haemophilia Society, has written to the House of Lords Appointments Commission asking it to defer a decision on whether to approve a peerage for Kenneth Clarke.

The House of Lords Appointments Commission, chaired by Lord Bew, is expected to discuss the peerage nomination for former MP Mr Clarke this week.

In her letter, Ms Carroll asked the commission to postpone its decision until after the Infected Blood Inquiry has finished its investigations.

Mr Clarke, who was a health minister and health secretary at pivotal periods during the contaminated blood scandal, is expected to be called to give evidence to the inquiry. Ms Carroll said it would be premature to consider Mr Clarke’s peerage nomination before this outstanding professional investigation has been completed. She told the commission that the timing of this matter was causing great distress to many members of our community.
