Alex Dowsett to attempt the Hour Record on 3 November in Mexico

Written by Aaron Dennis, October 15, 2021

We are beyond excited that British professional cyclist and Haemophilia Society member Alex Dowsett will attempt to break the record for the longest ever distance covered on a cycling track in 60 minutes on 3 November 2021, at the Aguascalientes Velodrome in Mexico. Alex has been a member of the Haemophilia Society for 25 years. He has severe haemophilia A and is the only known elite sportsperson with the condition to compete in an able-bodied field.

Alex is an absolute inspiration and our CEO Kate Burt was delighted to have the chance to speak with him and wish him luck when he was at Silverstone, training in a wind tunnel and later being interviewed by the media. Alex, 33, from Chelmsford in Essex, said:

Often the smaller, rare medical conditions are left behind and the success that haemophilia has had in the last couple of decades should be celebrated. This is my small way of trying to bring awareness to the haemophilia community, as well as hopefully inspiring a generation of people affected by haemophilia to reconsider their limitations and what’s possible with what was once a very debilitating condition.

The pro-cyclist will be raising money jointly for the Haemophilia Society and his own Little Bleeders charity, which works with clinicians and the NHS to introduce safe sport and activity to young people with haemophilia with a mission to support and empower families to make good choices that promote physical activity and overall well-being.
